The Dooars or Duars are floodplains located in the eastern north-eastern India. The word “Dooars” means gateway, and as the name suggests it is the gateway of North-East India and Bhutan. Sankosh River divided the region into two segments; Eastern Dooars and Western Dooars.
The geopolitical significance of Dooars is of great importance. This area is covered with multiple rivers like Jaldhaka, Sankosh, Murti, Torsa etc which determines the agriculture and business of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar district and Darjeeling Himalayas.
Lion share economy of this region depends on tourism, tea industry and timber. Being a place for more than one national park and wildlife sanctuaries this has been a great point of attraction for tourists for a long time. Some of the major attractions are Gorumara National Park, Chukchuki Bird-watching Point, Gorumara Safari, Rocky Island, Bindu/Jaldhaka River, Jaldapara Sanctuary, Chapramari Forest, Buxa Fort, Jayanti River and Murti. Visitors from other region of India or from foreign countries can reach the place via New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Station or via Bagdogra Airport.
